TSC To Promote 14,000 Teachers At A Cost Of Ksh 2.2 Billion

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will use at least 2.2 billion shillings to promote at least 14,000 teachers. The teachers’ employer says promoting teachers “is a matter of urgency” aimed at motivating them and having them “deliver better.”

While speaking to Members of Parliament, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia says the commission has received more than 14,000 requests for teachers’ promotions, most of which have stagnated in one job group “for years,” because TSC did not have money.

“We have been unable to promote these teachers because the Commission has not received promotion funds since the implementation of the 2021-2025 CBA. This has in turn tainted the Commission’s image. But this is going to change,” Macharia said.

TSC has been rushing against time to employ more teachers in an effort to avert a looming crisis brought about by the 100 percent transition being pushed by the government as well as the rollout of Grade 7 (Junior Secondary Schools) under CBC.

This year, TSC advertised 13,713 positions for principals, deputy principals, senior masters, secondary teachers, head teachers, and deputy head teachers in secondary and primary schools. The interviews were done and most of the positions have already been filled.

At the same time, the commission also announced 1,021 vacancies for teachers to be deployed as principals, deputy principals, head teachers, and deputy head teachers in arid and semi-arid lands and hard-to-staff counties. (Most teachers are always reluctant).

Teachers Service Commission named the ASALS and hard-to-staff counties as Baringo, Garissa, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kilifi Kitui, Kwale, Lamu, Madera, Marsabit, Narok, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Turkana, Wajir, and West Pokot.

“Applicants for vacancies in asal and hard-to-staff counties shall be required to upload the letter of deployment to the current responsibility during the application. The commission is working towards addressing teachers’ shortage,” said the commission.
