A third-year student from Maseno University was shot dead by police on Monday during the protests that had been organized by Azimio One Kenya Alliance. The demonstration rocked the cities of Kisumu and Nairobi bringing everything to a standstill.
William Mayange was shot in the neck when Azimio protesters invaded Maseno Police Line. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Coptic Hospital. The student was among the more than 50 youths who had invaded the police station.
The police at the station said that at least six police officers were injured during the demonstrations and were rushed to hospitals within Kisumu for medication.
A statement from the police says demonstrators invaded the police station prompting officers to use live ammunition. The police say the demonstrators attacked the station with stones and bonfires and threatened to burn down the station.
Governor of Kisumu County, Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o has issued a statement condemning the incident calling for speedy investigations into the incident.
The Governor has called on the police to speed up investigations and asked the to always observe restraint and professionalism while at work.

On Monday, there were demonstrations around the country organized by Azimio leader Raila Odinga. In Nairobi, businesses were at a standstill as demos rocked the city. The government estimates that at least 2 billion shillings were lost in Nairobi alone.
Raila and his team have announced that they will be holding demonstrations every Monday until their demands are met by the government of President William Ruto. Among the demands are to lower the cost of living and opening of the IEBC servers.
At the same time, at least two people were shot in Nairobi during the Maandano. The police are yet to issue a statement on those who were shot in Nairobi.
