Kalenjins form the majority number of teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) followed by Kikuyus and Luhyas. According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, 59,538 Kalenjins have been employed by the TSC as teachers out of a total of 346,760.

Nancy Macharia said Kikuyus’s number of teachers is 59,010 of the total, Luhyas 52,882, Luos 40,657, Kambas 39,807, Kisiis 30,317, and Meru 22,164. She was speaking before a Parliamentary Committee on Education last week.

“The four communities with the highest number of teachers employed by TSC happen to make up the biggest majority of the population. The figure is very relative to the population of the country,” she said.

According to the TSC CEO, the Teachers Service Commission currently has 37,243 primary school teachers and 16,128 post-primary teachers at the senior management level. “Majority of teachers at senior level management are within the age bracket of 50-58 years,” she said.

Macharia told the committee the commission has 59,424 teachers at the middle level comprising senior teachers in primary schools and senior masters in post-primary schools.

“Majority of teachers at the middle level are women at 58.6 percent. Notably, the age distribution of teachers at this level indicates that the majority are within the age bracket of 44-57 years,” she said. The CEO said the low-level cadre carries the majority of teachers standing at 233,965.

“Majority of teachers at senior level management are within the age bracket of 50-58 years,” she said.

At the same time, at least 21,544 teachers who sent requests for transfer to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have not received any reply or the way forward even as it emerged that the majority of teachers who want to be transferred want to go to Nairobi County.

According to a document presented before the Senate by the teachers’ employer, a total of 36,277 teachers applied for transfers between November 1 last year and January 31 this year. TSC says, of the teachers, 14,733 were matched and approved while 21,544 are pending.
