There are so many harrowing stories and screams of Kenyans being conned of their hard-earned money by Kenyan car dealers who promise state-of-the-art service and timely delivery of units, only to take the deposit that the client pays and squander it.

The latest Sheriff in this con game appears to be Kairo of Kai and Karo whose victims have come out crying, some leading to his arrest. He has an enterprising young man whose flamboyancy was beyond hiding but is now in disgrace after using clients’ money to fly his girlfriends to high-end entities.

Anyway, the truth is, you only get conned if you want to. Kenyans rarely learn. Most Kenyans are thieves and when dealing with them on matters of money, you need to treat each one of them as a suspect who is out to con you of your hard-earned money.

Here is how to avoid being conned:

Import the car yourself. Why would you have someone import it for you if you have the money? Get someone to guide you and import the car you love yourself. Do not rely on Kenyan middlemen. Many experts in Kenya will guide you on how to import your car.

Do not pay the deposit. Pay on delivery. If the seller is that genuine and committed, why can’t he ship in the car then you pay them? It is a risk on their part but why not transfer the cash on a fixed cheque to them, and instruct the bank to only cash it when you say so? The bank will lock the cash equivalent to that cheque.

Buy local units. Walk into a car yard buy your car and drive out. Pay cash or through the bank. Get all the required papers and transfers and go home with peace of mind. Why give someone your 2 million shillings and be thrown into months of uncertainty?
