The first Special Economic Zone with a gazetted customs control area in East Africa has been launched at the Nairobi Gate Industrial Park tailored towards supporting manufacturing, industry, economic growth, and employment within and without the East African Region.
The launch of the SEZ comes at a time when the government has been pushing for the country to embrace local manufacturing in the spirit of Buy Kenya, Build Kenya with calls for both local and international investors to take advantage and set up local industries.
Lying within an expansive piece of land, Nairobi Gate Industrial Park has been developed by Improvon Group, and designed in line with the East African customs requirements. According to Improvon, the SEZ is set to serve both local, regional, and international companies with the support of government agencies.

The consolidated customs control area incorporates physical infrastructure prescribed by the East African Community Customs Management Act including customs control with sophisticated weight bridges, one-stop-shop regulatory facilities, including KRA, KPA, SEZA, customs and other agencies, dedicated customs warehouse, and secured and monitored perimeter fence.
Nairobi Gate offers turnkey projects, ranging from mini units of 5,000 square feet to warehouses of 400,000 square feet, along with land sale options.
Speaking during the launch, Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, Principal Secretary State Department for Investment Promotion, assured investors of the support from the government including tax waivers for those who will set up shop within the designed Special Economic Zones.
“The government is committed to ensuring that investors get all the support they need. Efforts by Special Economic Zones such as the one being launched today are the steps towards the right direction that the government, through the Ministry has been championing,” he said.
