 TSC Introduces New Training And Recruitment Requirements For Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has come up with new training and recruitment requirements for teachers under the Competency-based Curriculum, CBC. Teachers will now have to train in three teaching subjects, take longer training, and teach practice sessions.

The Kenya National Examinations Council announced that it will train primary school teachers for marking the upcoming Grade six national assessment tests that will be done in December this year.

These categories of teachers will be taken through a training program on how to administer, mark, and award scores for the over one million learners who will sit for the above examinations.

TSC Proposal On The Structure Of Education Course

Each student pursuing education should have 3 teaching subjects that is 2 major subjects and one minor subject for cost-effectiveness and proper utilization of the teacher.

This will assist the Commission to handle the new areas that have been introduced in the Competency-based Curriculum for Junior and Senior Secondary schools. For example, Biology chemistry and community service or life skills education, or PE.

  1. Bachelor Of Arts with Education Degree

Mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE or equivalent. C Plain in English and Kiswahili and

In addition, every student should have at least B- or equivalent in three subjects chosen English, Kiswahili, literature, History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education, Islamic Religious Education, Hindu Religious, Business Studies, Mathematics, Arabic, French, German and Indigenous, PE, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Sign Language/Kenya sign language, Social Studies, Community service learning, and Life skills.

  1. Professional courses

Every student will be required to undertake the following professional courses:

  1. Curriculum Development,
  2. Psychology in Education,
  3. Sociology in Education,
  4. Foundations in education,
  5. Measurement and evaluation, planning and educational economics,
  6. Performance management,
  7. Mentor-ship and coaching,
  8. Education action research and
  9. educational leadership Micro

3 Practicum/ Attachment/ Teaching Practice

Every student will be required to undertake 2 full terms practicum of 6 months after completing the 5-year course.

Every student will be required to pass In all the core units and electives in each of the 3 subjects undertaken. They must have covered at least 12 units in each of the 3 teaching subjects

The whole course to take 5 ½ years with the following Requirements in the Subjects areas

Every student should have at least B- or equivalent In three subjects chosen Mathematics, Physics, Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, ICT, Computer Science, Agriculture, Integrated Science, Health Education, Sports, and Physical

  1. Technical Subjects

The whole course will take 5 ½years.with the following Requirements in the Subjects areas: –

Mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE or equivalent C Plain in English, Kiswahili and

Every student should have at least 8- or equivalent In three subjects chosen from Pre-technical and Pre-Career Education, Agricultural Technology, Crop Production, Animal Keeping, Foods and Nutrition, Home Management, Garment Making, and Interior Design, Aviation Technology, Wood Technology, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Technology, Electricity, electronics, metal Technology, Power Mechanics, Motor Vehicle mechanics, leather Work, Hair Dressing & Beauty Therapy, Plumbing & Ceramics, Welding & fabrication, Building Construction, and Metal Work.

  • Professional courses

Curriculum development,

  1. Practicum
