Safaricom’s M-Pesa: How the Tunaweza PWD Group Is Empowering Women With Disabilities Through MSMEs in Mombasa

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises(MSMEs) are key sources of jobs, income, and local growth—especially for women, youth, and vulnerable groups.

Their size and flexibility help build strong, fair, and sustainable communities.

In Mombasa, the Tunaweza PWD Group, founded by Charity Chahasi, is helping women with disability earn a living.

“Women with disabilities face a lot of violence, gender-based violence, rape, family discrimination, and even job discrimination. So I decided to start a group where women with disabilities can be able to do something so that we can sell and have something for our lives,” said Charity.

The members of the Tunaweza group use their different talents to manufacture products for sale.

“We make a variety of products, and this product ranges from jewelry, reusable sanitary pads, peanut butter, bags, and plastic flowers,” Charity says.

In the group’s day-to-day activities, Charity noted that mobile money has made their business easier.

“M-PESA has empowered our business because we use Pochi la Biashara. Whenever people pay us, we can save. We also use Fuliza when we don’t have enough money,” said Charity.

As the World celebrates SME Day, we need to enhance the role of MSMEs as drivers of sustainable growth and innovation.
