Proto Energy, Kenya’s largest bulk gas, Autogas, cylinder manufacturing, and LPG refilling company, has released its inaugural Half 1 2025 Sustainability Journey Report, a milestone that underscores its role in powering the country’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.
Founded with the mission to bridge the gap in demand for LPG in both domestic and industrial sectors, Proto Energy has become a household name through its trusted brands, Progas and Seagas. The new report, themed “Creating a World of Endless Possibilities Through Sustainable Practices”, is a testament to the company’s vision of “changing lives through affordable and sustainable LPG energy solutions” while embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into every facet of its operations.
According to CEO Joel Kamau, sustainability is now central to Proto Energy’s growth strategy. “Sustainability is no longer optional but essential. We are embedding it at the core of our business to create lasting value for our people, the planet, and our stakeholders. Our mission is to deliver clean, quality, and accessible LPG to every Kenyan household and business while protecting the environment and empowering our communities,” he said.
Proto Energy’s first sustainability report highlights the strides made in environmental protection and climate action. The company planted 600 trees across its operational sites and donated 100 indigenous seedlings to community projects, reinforcing its biodiversity and reforestation efforts.
In a bold move towards healthier educational environments, Proto Energy converted 38 schools from traditional firewood stoves to modern LPG systems, drastically cutting indoor air pollution while saving learning institutions time and resources. Through its OTOGAS-branded service stations, the company also continues to accelerate LPG-powered vehicle adoption, which emits up to 20% less carbon than petrol and diesel.
Beyond energy, Proto Energy has placed people at the heart of its sustainability agenda. The report details three medical camps and seven mental health awareness sessions conducted in the first half of 2025, two of which focused specifically on men—an often-overlooked demographic in mental health initiatives.
To strengthen gender equality in its workforce, the company launched a Women Empowerment Program that has already supported 37 female staff members with leadership insights from industry trailblazers such as Risper Ohanga, CFO at EABL. Community impact initiatives also extended to three major clean-up drives and public LPG safety awareness campaigns, ensuring that end-users remain informed and safe while using clean energy.
Proto Energy’s operational strength continues to match its social and environmental ambitions. In H1 2025, the company earned recertifications for ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, and ISO 14001:2015 standards, affirming its commitment to quality, safety, and environmental management systems.
Its expansive reach through Progas and Seagas cylinders now extends to more than 10,000 retail partners across Kenya, ensuring access to clean cooking energy in both urban and rural areas. The Kabati-based manufacturing and refilling plant in Murang’a County further solidifies Proto Energy’s dominance, with the capacity to produce up to 160,000 LPG cylinders monthly—one of the largest capacities in the region.
The report not only reviews past achievements but also lays out a future-forward strategy. By 2030, Proto Energy aims to achieve 70% reliance on captive green power across its operations, alongside afforesting and reforesting 100 hectares of land. The company has also set its sights on a Net-Zero carbon footprint by 2040, a bold pledge that aligns with Kenya’s national climate goals and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those on clean energy (SDG 7), health (SDG 3), education (SDG 4), and climate action (SDG 13).
Mr. Aggrey Ganira, Head of ESG at Proto Energy, emphasized the company’s broader role in shaping Kenya’s sustainable development. “We are not just an energy provider; we are a partner in Kenya’s sustainable development. This journey is a testament to the momentum we have built. We are moving forward with intention, impact, and integrity to build a cleaner, healthier, and more inclusive future for all,” he said.
Proto Energy’s inaugural sustainability report comes at a time when Kenya is intensifying its efforts to shift households and industries from biomass and fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives. By combining environmental protection, community empowerment, and operational efficiency, Proto Energy is demonstrating that business growth and sustainability can—and must—go hand in hand.
As the company continues its journey, the bold initiatives outlined in its H1 2025 report not only reflect internal progress but also serve as a model for other corporations looking to align profitability with long-term responsibility.
With its ambitious roadmap, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to ESG principles, Proto Energy is not just supplying gas cylinders—it is igniting a cleaner, brighter, and more sustainable future for Kenya and beyond.
