Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), is about to retire. Many teachers want her gone, and most we have talked to say they cannot wait to throw a party for the exit of Nancy Macharia and wish her the best in another life. Nobody knows why they hate her so much.

Appointed in 2015, Dr. Macharia was the first woman to hold the CEO position. Her career began as an assistant teacher and progressed to Deputy Principal at Kianderi Girls’ Secondary School. She holds a Doctorate in Education and has been awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW).

Anyway, she is leaving soon, and the process to replace her has already gained momentum. The new CEO must be in place by July 1 and that means the recruitment process must begin as soon as this April. The process will include advertising the position, listing, and interviewing the suitable candidates. Dr. Macharia will begin her terminal leave in April, which aligns with the start of the search for her successor.

The role is likely to attract interest from senior education professionals, including school principals and Ministry of Education officials. Many believe an internal candidate might be favored due to the TSC’s complex operations. Although others prefer to have an outsider to turn the ship around.

As the largest East African employer, being a CEO of TSC is not a small achievement. Sources within the TSC have informed us that politics have already taken center stage. There is speculation that President William Ruto might propose a candidate from the Public Service Commission’s pool for Permanent Secretary roles, as the TSC CEO position carries similar weight.

Given the previous appointments by President William Ruto in other dockets and ministries, some feel, if left to appoint someone, the President might end up appointing someone from his tribe or someone with no educational background to head the institution. Although, there are speculations that the President might appoint Belio Kipsang to head TSC.
