Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has warned Kenyans to expect heavier than usual rainfall that will pound most parts of the country, including Nairobi. According to the weatherman, the rain expected is 20mm and is expected to hit most parts starting March 9, 2025.

“Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area and Southeastern lowlands on March 9, 2025,” said Kenya Met in a statement to Kenyans.

Major counties expected to be hit are; Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Kajiado.

Residents in the mentioned counties have been advised to be on the lookout for floods, flash floods, and poor visibility. People have also been advised not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightening.

The announcement by Kenya Met comes at a time most counties such as Nairobi are poorly prepared for any form of disaster, let alone floods. Any little rain causes floods in Nairobi, and one wonders how the county will look if the rain predicted by Kenya Met is going to hit the ground.

For years, Nairobi County has seemed to have been heavily relying on evaporation as the only solution to poor drainage and floods. During the long dry season, one would have expected the county government to fix the drainage, but the governor was jumping from one club to another.

Meanwhile, Nairobians should pray that the coming heavy rains will not cause deaths or have building coming down and that if possible, boats will be on standby for them.
