Friends of Karura (FKF) is thrilled to announce the eagerly anticipated 2023 FKF Anniversary Race, an annual celebration of their mission to preserve Nairobi’s most significant indigenous forest, the Karura Forest.
This year’s event promises to be more inclusive, affordable, and community-oriented than ever, welcoming participants from all walks of life to join us in this remarkable journey.
“Building upon the successes of previous years, the 2023 FKF Anniversary Race will feature a range of race options, including 2km, 5km, 10km, and the challenging 21 km race.
Additionally, we will host a Berlin Marathon watch party for 1,200 participants, fostering a sense of unity and celebration within our community.” Said Chantal Mariotte, a member of the FKF board in charge of the Anniversary race.
The FKF Anniversary Race was inaugurated in 2019 as an annual celebration of the dedicated conservation efforts of Friends of Karura and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). Its objectives are threefold: Promote Conservation: Raise awareness about the vital conservation work undertaken by FKF and KFS in safeguarding the Karura Forest—a precious natural asset for Nairobi and the region.
Foster Inclusivity: To offer a safe and friendly race experience for all levels of runners, seeking to influence those who may not have previously considered participating in a race to take their first steps into competitive running. Celebrate Community: To reflect the spirit of FKF, itself a community-based organization, by creating an affordable, family-friendly, festival event through the coming together of corporate partners and the public.
Ms. Mariotte added “To ensure maximum accessibility, race entry fees have been thoughtfully set at Ksh 1,500 for adults and Ksh 750 for children. This fee includes Forest and race entry, providing participants with an exclusive opportunity to explore the breathtaking Karura Forest.
A commemorative race t-shirt and medal which serve as lasting mementos of your participation. Free access to professionally captured race photography, allowing you to relive the memorable moments. A post-race celebration featuring refreshments, family entertainment, and a screening of the 2023 Berlin Marathon, creating an unforgettable experience for all.”
Entries for the event are now closed, with the sales lasting just 48 hours. Participants at previous events have been able to enjoy Eliud Kipchoge’s record-breaking INEOS 1:59 and 2022 Berlin Marathon runs, so those lucky enough to have secured entry are no doubt hoping that the double Olympic champion can thrill again with another World Record this time around.
