Francis Atwoli has been the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) for more than 20 years. He was first elected to the position in August 2001.
Atwoli, known for his noise, shouting, blubbering, intimidating, and flaunting to anyone who cares to know how rich he is, seems to have outlived his usefulness at COTU, and perhaps, it is time for him to pave the way for new blood.
There was a time Francis Atwoli would call for a nationwide strike for all workers, and the country would stand still. Then, Atwoli stood for something. His voice was heard, and workers had hopes in him.
Then, as time passed by, Atwoli realized one thing: Kenyan workers were goods that he could hawk to the government of the day to make himself rich and known. For more than 15 years, Francis Atwoli has been using Kenyan workers as his bargaining chips for his material gain.
He has become a puppet who only sings praises of anyone in power to keep his deals alive. He does not care whether the one in power has the best interests of workers or not. But whether the one in power recognizes his noise, the noise of Francis Atwoli, Trade Unionist Number One, in Kenya and Africa.
When Francis Atwoli grabs a microphone, he rarely talks about the welfare of workers, unless it benefits him. In most cases, he grabs the mic to show off his latest bling bling. To him, the poor workers can go to hell, but he must eat with a big spoon with whoever is in power.
Of late, Francis Atwoli seems to have been recruited to be a voice against the freedom of speech. The shouting old man seems to have declared war on social media and has vowed that before he retires, we will make sure that social media is either shut down in Kenya or regulated.
Atwoli has vowed to talk to his “friend” and “son”, President William Samoei Ruto, to ensure that social media is regulated. Atwoli and his cronies are afraid of social media because it is free wind. Young Kenyans on social media are only afraid of electricity and hot porridge. Not the likes of Francis Atwoli and his shouting mouth.
It is time for young Kenyans to tell Francis Atwoli that the time for him to retire to his beachside house has come… The time for him to retire to one of his posh homes and take care of his youngest kid, one who should be his great-grandson, has come… It is time for Francis Atwoli to go home.
