Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family who became globally known as the “Sleeping Prince” after falling into a coma nearly two decades ago, has died at the age of 36.
Prince Al-Waleed’s life changed tragically in 2005 when he was involved in a devastating car crash while studying at a military college in London.
The accident left the then 15-year-old prince with a severe brain hemorrhage and internal bleeding. He never regained full consciousness and remained in a coma for the next 20 years.
Following the crash, he was transferred to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained under intensive medical care. Despite the grim prognosis, his family – especially his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud – held onto hope for a miracle recovery.
Prince Khaled became widely respected for his unwavering commitment to his son’s care, publicly refusing all suggestions to remove life support throughout the years.
News of Prince Al-Waleed’s passing was confirmed by his father in an emotional post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. The announcement triggered an outpouring of grief and condolences from across Saudi Arabia and beyond, with the hashtag “Sleeping Prince” trending widely.
Thousands of users shared their sympathies and prayers for the late prince and his family. “May Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled rest in peace. Deepest sympathies to his loved ones,” one user wrote, capturing the sentiment felt by many.
Prince Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal, a prominent member of the royal family and the nephew of billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal.
Though his life was tragically cut short, the story of Prince Al-Waleed captured hearts around the world, becoming a symbol of both unimaginable tragedy and the enduring power of a family’s love and hope. His legacy now lives on in the memories of those who never stopped believing he might one day wake up.
