Kenyan Teachers Under TSC Set For Up To 32% Salary Increment

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has proposed a salary increment for all teachers in job groups B5 to D5 under the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), with both KNUT and KUPPET pushing for the implementation in the next two weeks.

In a meeting held with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on Tuesday, TSC tabled proposals for a basic salary increase of between 16% and 32%, alongside a 20% rise in all allowances, effective 1st July 2025 and urged teachers to drop the planned nationwide strike.

The Commission has also recommended the restructuring of job groups, including the scrapping of B5 and C4 and the introduction of new grades D1 and D2 for primary school teachers. This will see most teachers move one job group up—for instance, from C1 to C2, and C2 to C3.

TSC has expressed intent to effect the new salary structure in the July payroll, which is currently open, pending formal agreement with the three teachers’ unions. A final meeting for discussions and signing of the CBA has been scheduled for Friday, 18th July at the Kenya Institute of Special Education.

The Commission has invited representatives from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) to the meeting.

Among key issues addressed in the TSC–SRC deliberations was the proposed review of hardship allowances. The two bodies agreed that all currently designated hardship areas will be retained and teachers in those regions will continue receiving the allowance.

The new CBA is expected to include both monetary and non-monetary benefits. However, KNUT and KUPPET have warned that they will mobilize nationwide industrial action should the Commission fail to implement the agreement within two weeks of signing.
