The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted that rainfall will persist in parts of the country during the current week, although a reduction in intensity and coverage is anticipated towards the latter half.
The department highlighted varying weather conditions expected across different counties, with rainfall continuing in select regions despite the gradual decline.
According to the statement, areas likely to experience continued rainfall include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley. These regions are expected to experience intermittent showers and thunderstorms during the afternoons and evenings of the early part of the week.
Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi are set to experience a mix of weather patterns. Cloudy mornings are expected on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, which will gradually transition into sunny intervals. However, on Wednesday morning, light rainfall is anticipated in isolated areas.
Afternoons on Tuesday and Wednesday will likely bring localized showers accompanied by thunderstorms. For the remainder of the week, afternoon showers may still occur, albeit on a smaller scale and affecting fewer areas. Nighttime showers are also expected to continue on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, while Thursday night will remain mostly partly cloudy.
Temperature-wise, these counties will record maximum daytime temperatures of up to 30°C, while the minimum temperatures may dip to 8°C, particularly in high-altitude regions.
In the southeastern lowlands, specifically Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland regions of Tana River County, residents can expect generally sunny mornings throughout the week. Afternoon weather conditions will vary, with showers expected in a few areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday through Saturday, the afternoons are forecasted to be dry and sunny.
Nighttime conditions in these counties will also feature occasional rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, with partly cloudy skies expected for the remainder of the week. The daytime temperatures are forecasted to reach highs of 35°C, while the minimum nighttime temperatures will hover around 12°C.
Along the coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana River County, residents should brace for wet weather on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These areas are likely to receive showers both in the mornings and afternoons on these days. The weather is forecasted to shift on Friday, bringing sunny conditions throughout the day. On Saturday, morning sunshine will give way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon.
The coastal belt will experience warm conditions, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 34°C. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively high at around 23°C, reflecting the region’s humid tropical climate.
Counties located in the Lake Victoria Basin and the western highlands, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, as well as parts of the Rift Valley such as Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, are forecasted to continue receiving rainfall throughout much of the week.
Morning rains are expected in a few areas across these counties on most days, while afternoon hours will likely bring showers and thunderstorms, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday. These areas will also experience night-time rainfall in isolated areas throughout the week, with the exception of Thursday night, which is predicted to remain dry.
Maximum temperatures across these counties will peak at around 30°C, while the lowest temperatures are expected to dip to 9°C.
The northern counties of Turkana and Samburu are projected to remain mostly dry, characterized by sunny intervals during the day. However, exceptions are noted for Tuesday and Wednesday, where residents may experience light rainfall or cloudy conditions in the mornings, afternoons, and even at night.
These arid regions will continue to experience high temperatures, with daytime highs of up to 37°C. Night temperatures will fall significantly, with lows expected at around 8°C.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to flash floods and landslides. While the intensity of rainfall is expected to diminish as the week progresses, isolated storms and sudden showers could still occur.
Farmers, transport operators, and local authorities have been advised to stay informed through daily weather updates to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.
With these weather variations across the country, the department emphasized the importance of preparedness, particularly as the nation transitions from the rainy season toward a drier spell later in the month.
