Crown Paints Kenya PLC has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by undertaking a large-scale mangrove planting project in the coastal town of Tsunza, Kwale County in partnership with the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya as part of its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) mission.

The firm’s Group Chief Operations Officer, Richard Muturi, said the project exemplifies their proactive approach to combat climate change while enhancing environmental impact. He said mangrove forests play a crucial role in supporting Kenya’s coastline and preserving global environmental health.

“These forests will act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide, which makes them essential in the fight against global warming”, Muturi explained.

“A mature hectare of mangrove forest, with a lifespan of about 25 years, can sequester up to 840 metric tonnes of CO₂, while each mangrove tree captures approximately 308 kg (or 0.3 tonnes) of CO₂ over its lifetime, averaging 12.3 kg per year. With Crown Paints’ ambitious planting efforts and an expected 85% survival rate, the anticipated carbon sequestration impact is estimated at around 773 tonnes, highlighting the company’s dedication to meaningful environmental stewardship,” Muturi added.

The COO said the initiative will go beyond ecological benefits, by closely linking the paint manufacturer’s sustainability mission to social empowerment. He said initiative will help the company to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports local economies, fisheries, and ecotourism, which are vital drivers of resilience in the region. The project actively engages local communities, making them partners in the conservation of their natural resources. This collaborative approach not only enhances community livelihoods but also fosters a shared sense of responsibility towards the environment.

“The Tsunza mangrove planting is a significant component of our comprehensive ESG strategy. Prioritizing environmental stewardship has always been at the heart of our operations. We are committed to reducing our ecological footprint and making a positive contribution to the planet. This effort aligns with our goals of promoting social responsibility, as the company actively engages with communities to ensure mutual benefit from our sustainability projects. Transparency and accountability remain central to the firm’s ESG approach, driving continuous evaluation and improvement to set a benchmark in the corporate sector for responsible and sustainable business practices,” added Muturi argued.

The mangrove planting project in Tsunza marks an important milestone in the firm’s ambitious sustainability journey. As the company expands its initiatives, it remains dedicated to fostering a cleaner, greener Kenya—one tree at a time.
