Abdi Dahir, a 25-year-old resident of Garissa, is the latest recipient of KSh1 million in the Safaricom @25 Shangwe consumer promotion. He says the win will help him secure stable housing for his family and support his siblings’ education, a step he hopes will ease the financial strain they have long faced.
“I have always dreamt of building my mother a decent house,” he said. “With my earnings, it felt impossible. Now I can finally give her a home she can be proud of.”
In addition to the cash prize, Abdi received KSh250,000 to fund a community project. He chose to support Sangailu Primary School in Garissa, where many pupils sit on dusty floors, share worn-out desks, and walk long distances in search of water.
“For the project, I want to donate desks and water tanks,” he said. “Those children struggle even for a sip of water. If I can lessen that burden, their dreams may be easier to pursue.”
Soft-spoken but visibly grateful, Abdi described the win as life-changing. He encouraged other young people to keep participating in the promotion, adding: “You never know — your turn to become a young millionaire might be next.”
