The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has planned the training of junior Secondary School teachers in Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) with effect from 25th April to 13th May 2022.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia told education stakeholders on Tuesday, April 5, that the training was targeted at equipping teachers with skills in teaching the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) ahead of Grade Six learners’ transition to Junior High School in 2023.

According to Macharia, the training will benefit 60,000 teachers and will be totally funded by the government for public school teachers.

“The commission has planned for 60,000 teachers in April to prepare them for Junior Secondary Schools in CBC with effect from April 25. This is immediately after the marking of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations,” she stated.

The cascade model of training requires that the Master train the trainers and thereafter offer professional support during the face teacher training in the county and sub-county.

Here is the cascade model of training

  1. The Master Trainers train the Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) physically for four days
  2. The TOT trains teachers face to face with strict adherence to MOH Covid-19
  3. The Master Trainers offer professional support during teachers’ training at the County and Sub-County

Target Teachers

The target of the training will be all the teachers handling grades 7,8 and 9 from both public and private schools. The first level of training will target teachers of Languages, pure science, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, and technical subjects.

The teachers will be clustered according to the department. Secondary schools will each nominate six teachers drawn from languages, pure science, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, and technical subjects.

The target teachers will be grouped as

  1. Languages
  2. Pure sciences
  3. Applied Sciences
  4. Humanities
  5. Technical subjects and creative arts

The trainers of Trainers will train regular teachers at the Sub-County level and the SNE teachers at the county level.
